Thanks for your interest in nominating a student for the Newman Civic Fellowship program!

The Newman Civic Fellowship, named in honor of Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact's founders, recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes and supports student public problem solvers at Campus Compact member institutions.

Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities. Throughout the fellowship year, Campus Compact provides students with opportunities to nurture their assets and help them develop strategies for social change—creating a network of connected and engaged student leaders who can support one another in making a positive difference. This Fellowship comes with benefits such as a 3-day national in-person convening with 150+ other Newman Fellows, bi-weekly leadership and networking sessions, the chance to apply and receive up to $1,500 in mini-grant funding for social impact projects, exclusive access to online platforms and communication channels, and extensive access to special undergraduate and post-graduate opportunities from our national partners. You can save your Newman Civic Fellow nomination as you go, but if you want a sneak peak, you can check out what the nomination form entails here. Please note each Campus Compact institution can only nominate one student per institution so please ensure you have gone through your institution's proper Newman selection process before filling out your Newman nomination on behalf of your institution.

Please read the following requirements and check the box at the bottom to confirm that your Newman Civic Fellow nomination meets the conditions below.

Student Eligibility

The Newman Civic Fellowship is intended to honor the leadership legacy of Campus Compact founder Frank Newman by recognizing community-committed students who:

1. Engage in collaborative action with others from campus or from surrounding communities in order to create long-term social change.

2. Take action in addressing issues of inequality and political polarization.

3. Demonstrate the motivation and potential for effective long-term civic engagement.

In addition to these core characteristics, Newman Civic Fellow nominees must also meet the following eligibility criteria:

1. The nominee must be currently enrolled at a Campus Compact member institution (student must be enrolled and attending your institution during the current semester in which you are submitting the nomination).

2. Nominee must have at least one year of their education remaining (either at their current institution or at a different one) such that they will be enrolled in higher education for the duration of the upcoming academic year.

Additional Nomination Requirements

1. The student must be nominated by the president or chancellor of their institution.

2. Each institution may nominate only one student. You cannot have the same student serve as a Newman Fellow in consecutive years (do not nominate the same student two years in a row).

3. Nominees must commit to providing a short reflection piece (video, article, or letter format, etc.) to Campus Compact during their fellowship year.

4. The nominee's institution must commit to helping the nominee identify a local mentor for the duration of the fellowship.

5. The nominee's institution commits to supporting the Newman nominee in booking and securing travel to/from the annual Newman Civic Fellowship Convening which is every fall of the academic year (exact date and location will be released to Newmans once selected). Campus Compact is here to assist students or institutions who may need financial assistance to ensure their Newman can attend.

Recommended Guidance

For institutions with both undergraduate and graduate programs, presidents and chancellors are encouraged to recommend the most deserving student, with preference given to undergraduate students.

Institutions seeking guidance on how to proceed in selecting a student to nominate for the Newman Civic Fellowship can consult the Newman Civic Fellowship nomination page.

If your nominee or application cannot meet the above criteria, please email fellows@compact.org with your eligibility questions before continuing

Requirements Agreement

Please review the nomination form prior to beginning your nomination submission.

There are components of this nomination form that require information from the student nominee. You will need to work with the student to develop those materials prior to submission. You can review all components of the nomination here.

Letters of nomination must be signed by the president or chancellor and should be written on the president or chancellor's official letterhead.

Barring any extenuating circumstances, all nominees who meet the eligibility criteria listed above will become Newman Civic Fellows as long as the institution remains an active, dues-paying member of Campus Compact during the Fellowship year.

All nominations are due by 11:59 PM EST on April 25, 2025.

All materials must be submitted through this online form. Hard copy, fax, and email submissions will not be accepted.

The individual listed as the contact person for the nomination submission will receive a confirmation email upon submission of the nomination form.

Although institutions will receive notification of their accepted nomination beforehand, the 2025-2026 Newman Civic Fellows will be publicly announced in early September 2025 at the start of the academic calendar year.

Once the nominee is accepted and the institution informed, institutions are welcome to internally recognize their Newman nominee prior to that date. However, we ask you refrain from any public stories or announcements (newspaper articles, web updates, social media announcements, etc.) until our full cohort is announced at the start of the academic year.

Information Needed from the President or Chancellor's Office

Letter of Nomination from the President or Chancellor

A letter of nomination needs to come from and be signed by the president or chancellor of the nominating institution and should be written on official letterhead. This letter should reflect the president/chancellor's intention to have this student represent the college or university in a national fellowship of community-committed students.

Please include information about the nominee's approach(es) to addressing the root causes of social issues. These may include, for example, involvement in public policy reform, community organizing, community-based research, social entrepreneurism, or other efforts to build the capacity of community-based organizations.

Additionally, please let us know why you believe this student has the motivation and potential to develop innovative and collaborative approaches to addressing public problems and to contribute to a network of similarly-committed students.

Leadership Profile for Website (Summary or Blurb from Recommendation)

In the space below, please provide a brief (200 word max) abstract summarizing the recommendation.

Please note that this profile should be approved by the president or chancellor as the their name will appear underneath it. These profiles will be used for publicity purposes and will be featured on Campus Compact's website.

Please include information central to the recommendation including the nominee's approach to addressing the root causes of social issues and about the nominee's potential for developing innovative and collaborative strategies for addressing public problems.

Example: Daniela Green, a second year student at Compact University, is a student leader active in addressing issues of food justice. For the last two years she has worked closely with grassroots efforts to advocate for the rights of local farm workers, including efforts to mobilize residents in surrounding communities to support policy that would provide higher wages and greater legal protections to farm workers. She is currently working with local residents and her fellow students to explore possibilities for creating a subsidized mobile farmers market that would help make fresh produce more accessible to neighborhoods that are not served by large grocery stores.

Newman Personal Statement and Mentor Information

Nominee Personal Statement

Please provide a brief (200-word max) statement from the nominated student about their work. The student's name will appear under this personal statement. These personal statements will be used for publicity purposes and will be featured on Campus Compact's website. The student should include information central to the recommendation, including their approach to addressing the root causes of social issues and their potential for developing innovative and collaborative strategies for addressing public problems.

Example: I first became involved in addressing issues of economic inequality by volunteering with my family at a nearby homeless shelter on Saturdays while growing up. As I got older and became more involved in addressing homelessness in local communities, I came to understand how societal systems can work together to create cycles of poverty and can make it incredibly difficult for individuals to get a new start. On campus, I lead one of our student service organizations that raises money and organizes volunteers for the homeless shelter in town. I also am involved in community efforts to resist potential legislation that would criminalize homelessness and to advocate for policy proposals that would provide greater alternative sentencing options for youth convicted of nonviolent minor crimes.

Newman Nominee's Mentor Information
We highly encourage working with your Newman nominee to identify an appropriate Newman mentor early on in the process.

Newman mentors can be any professional at the institution, in the local community, or in the larger professional field related to the nominee's studies or professional interests as long as the nominating institution and Newman nominee agree the chosen mentor would be a good fit for the specific nominee.

Once mentors are chosen, Newman mentors will be given specific instructions, a mentor orientation, and regular support from Campus Compact staff once the fellowship begins in the fall semester.

If you have trouble identifying or finding a mentor for your Newman Fellowship nominee, please reach out to our Compact staff at fellows@compact.org, and we will be happy to assist you in finding a Newman alum or other appropriate mentor for your student.
