Thanks for your interest in the Engaged Scholars Initiative (ESI). ESI is a one-year, cohort-based leadership and professional development program that supports faculty and staff in strengthening their community-engaged scholarship.

Directions: Please complete this application for the 2025-2026 ESI cohort. 


Applicants are selected for the program based on their eligibility:
  1. Must be from a Campus Compact member institution
  2. Must be early career faculty or staff 
  3. Must be interested in applying the foundational scholarship of community engagement to their work through the completion of a scholarly project, and 
  4. Must be able to participate in all program components. 
Additionally, we seek to create a diverse cohort demographically, geographically, and by institution type.

Letter of Interest
Please draft a letter of interest of no more than 2 pages addressing at least two of the following questions:
  1. Your commitment to and experience with community-engaged scholarship or the work of a community-engagement professional.
  2. The critical issues you are most concerned about in the field.
  3. The significance of positionality in your personal or professional life, especially as it relates to the complex and nuanced issues associated with community engagement
  4. Reflection on the strengths you would contribute to this cohort and what you hope to gain by being a participant.
Scholarly Project
Overview of a relevant scholarly project (approximately 1 page) to be initiated, pursued, and/or completed during the Engaged Scholars Initiative. Applicable engaged/engagement scholarship can include original research, creating activities, teaching, and learning, and/or program evaluation.
Letter of Support
Please provide a letter of support of no more than 2 pages from your institution's president, chancellor, chief academic officer, and/or chief student affairs officer that expresses:
  1. Support for the applicant's participation
  2. Potential institutional benefits to the nominee's participation
  3. Description of institutional support, which indicates the commitment to support the time needed for the applicant to participate in the program and covering the nominee's participation costs (program fee & travel cost for in-person gatherings)
